Esta actividad balnearia trae consigo un gran cambio en las costumbres sociales y culturales y una nueva prenda, masculina y femenina: el traje de baño. Los distintos tratados relativos a los baños de mar y a los bañadores nos hablan de normas muy estrictas, tanto en lo que se refiere a los colores y materiales como a su diseño. No hay que olvidar que los baños eran recomendados por los facultativos por motivos de salud, por lo que la estética era lo menos importante de estos trajes. Debido también a la moralidad de la época, el material más utilizado era la lana, para que no se pegase al cuerpo.
